Free Harness Training Guide

Turning your cat into an adventure cat starts with the right gear. That’s why I’m excited to launch the ACH (Adventure Cat Harness)—available for purchase soon. I’ve been testing it on kittens and cats for the past year, and so far, no cat has escaped. I can’t wait for your cat to try it!
In the meantime, check out my free harness training guide below to get your cat ready for adventure.
Harness Train Your Cat in Just 5 Days
Harness training usually takes about 5-7 days for most cats. Follow the steps below and if your cat isn't a pro by day 7 (can happen with older or more stubborn cats), just repeat the process. Patience is key—your cat will get there!
Phase 1: Indoor Harness Training
The first step is getting your cat comfortable wearing their escape-proof cat harness indoors. If this is their first time, expect some hilarious reactions like playing dead, wobbling like a drunk or acting like they’ve forgotten how to walk. Don’t worry! This is totally normal. To get over this hurdle, put the harness on your cat every day for a week straight gradually increasing the time it's worn per day.
The 5-7 day training plan
Day 1: Wear the harness for 30 minutes. Give treats and praise.
Day 2: Increase time worn to 1 hour. Let them move around freely.
Day 3: Extend wear time to a few hours.
Day 4: Add a few more hours than previous day.
Day 5: Bump it up to several hours—watch as they start walking normally and maybe even napping in it.
Day 6: Most of the day in the harness.
Day 7: A full 24 hours in the harness (especially important if you plan to go camping or backpacking with your cat).
Pro tip
Once your cat starts acting normal with it on, play with them indoors while they wear it. The goal: you want your cat to associate the harness with fun. Harness = playtime.
A note for older cats
Some cats (especially older cats) might take 7+ days to get fully harness trained. This happens. It's OK. Just repeat the steps, increasing wear time a little each day until they act natural with it on.
