Can any cat be an adventure cat?
Most cats are capable of more than we think. The question is whether you’re ready to take them there.
Most cats are capable of more than we think. The question is whether you’re ready to take them there.
But the better question is: are you ready to be an adventure cat parent?
Because this journey isn’t really about whether your cat can do it. It’s about whether you’re willing to show up for it slowly, consistently and with a whole lot of patience.
Let’s start with something important: cats are not dogs. Training a cat is not like training a dog. It's not about obedience or perfection or getting them to walk perfectly on a leash in 10 minutes. It’s about trust. It’s about repetition. It’s about making the unfamiliar feel familiar, one experience at a time.
And most importantly, it’s about letting your cat set the pace.
When I first started taking Max outside, she froze at everything.
There were moments I wondered if I was doing something wrong, if I was overwhelming her or if maybe she just “wasn’t one of those cats.”
But here is the truth I have learned after years of adventuring with her:
There is no such thing as “those cats.”
There are just cats…and time.
Adventure does not have to mean backpacking through the mountains.
For your cat, adventure might mean:
It all counts.
The truth is, your cat’s adventure lifestyle will usually reflect your lifestyle.
If you love hiking, camping, road trips, or spending time outdoors regularly, your cat has the opportunity to grow into those experiences alongside you. But if your version of adventure is slower, quieter or closer to home? That’s beautiful too.
Adventuring with your cat does not need to be extreme to be meaningful.
The goal is not to turn your cat into a backpacking cat or the cats you see on social media. The goal is enrichment, confidence, curiosity and shared experiences that build a fuller life together.
And consistency matters more than intensity ever will.
Cats are creatures of habit. When outdoor time becomes part of their normal routine, even in small ways, they begin to build familiarity and confidence over time.
So start where you are. Start where they are. And let the adventure grow naturally from there.
Your cat feeds off your energy.
If you’re stressed, overwhelmed, nervous or panicking while trying to figure everything out in real time, they feel that. But when you’re calm, prepared, and confident, they start to feel safer too.
That’s why I always tell people to enjoy the hobby yourself first.
If hiking, camping, road trips, or outdoor adventures are things you genuinely enjoy and plan to continue doing regularly, it becomes much easier to safely and naturally integrate your cat into that lifestyle.
Adventure cats are not built through social media moments. They’re built through real life—and how you actually live your life.
Sometimes your cat will explore the whole trail. Sometimes they’ll stay in the backpack the entire time. Sometimes they’ll sniff every blade of grass like it contains the meaning of life. Sometimes they’ll sit in a bush for 20 minutes and refuse to move. Sometimes they’ll surprise you and walk through water or show an act of bravery you had no idea they had in them. And sometimes they’ll freeze.
All of that is normal.
Max still has moments where she gets nervous. She still has preferences, moods and boundaries. She’s still a cat.
Training an adventure cat isn’t about creating a fearless animal. It’s about building trust strong enough that they feel safe exploring the world with you. And about giving them enrichment beyond four walls.
So, can any cat be an adventure cat? Yes. But not because every cat is the same. Because every cat is capable of more when they are met with patience, consistency and trust.
It is not about having a certain type of cat. It is about having a willingness to train them.
Start small. Stay patient. Pay attention to their cues. Celebrate every tiny win because it matters more than it looks like in the moment. Remember, progress over perfection. And yes, pack extra treats.
If you have ever thought “my cat could never,” I would gently challenge that.
Maybe they could. Maybe they already are. And maybe they just need time, consistency, and someone willing to show up for them today and again tomorrow.
Harness training is a great place to start.
The Adventure Cat Harness (ACH) was designed to help cats feel safe, secure and comfortable while exploring the world alongside you, whether that’s in the backyard or the backcountry.
Because every cat deserves the chance to experience more of life.
