Step-by-step guide to get your cat harness-ready in just 7 days.
Turning your cat into an adventure cat starts with the right gear. Thatโs why I created the ACH (Adventure Cat Harness)โnow available for preorder. Iโve been testing it on kittens and cats for the past year and a half, and so far,ย no cat has escaped. I canโt wait for your cat to try it!ย
In the meantime, check out my free harness training guide below to get your cat ready for adventure.
Just like when dogs wear shoes for the first time and forget how to walk, a cat with a harness on may play dead, act drunk or look completely ridiculous. Itโs hilarious but totally normal.
The good news? With patience and consistency, your cat WILL get used to it.
For most cats, harness training takes about 7 days. The key is gradual exposure. Put the harness on your cat every day for a week straightโgradually increasing the time itโs worn each day.
Day 1:ย ~30 minutes
Day 2: ~ 1 hour
Day 3: A few hours
Day 4: Longer indoor wear
Day 5: Several hoursโtry playing & normal daily activities
Day 6: Most of the day
Day 7: A full 24 hours in the harnessโkey for camping or backpacking
As soon as you put the harness on, immediately give your cat a treat. As the days progress and they become more comfortable with it on, play with them like you normally would. You want the cat to associate the harness with positive experiences!
If you stick with this process for a week, your cat will eventually start acting totally normal in the harnessโnapping, eating, just living life in it. Thatโs the goal.
A note for older (or more stubborn) cats:
Some cats may take longer than 7 daysโand thatโs OK. Just repeat the process, slowly increasing wear time each day until it feels natural. Let them adjust at their own pace. You got this!
