Free Harness Training Guide

Turning your cat into an adventure cat starts with the right gear. Thatโ€™s why I created the ACH (Adventure Cat Harness)โ€”now available for preorder. Iโ€™ve been testing it on kittens and cats for the past year and a half, and so far,ย no cat has escaped. I canโ€™t wait for your cat to try it!ย

In the meantime, check out my free harness training guide below to get your cat ready for adventure.

Most people give up after day 1. Donโ€™t be most people!

Just like when dogs wear shoes for the first time and forget how to walk, a cat with a harness on may play dead, act drunk or look completely ridiculous. Itโ€™s hilarious but totally normal.

The good news? With patience and consistency, your cat WILL get used to it.

How to Harness Train Your Cat in 7 Days

For most cats, harness training takes about 7 days. The key is gradual exposure. Put the harness on your cat every day for a week straightโ€”gradually increasing the time itโ€™s worn each day.

01

Day 1:ย ~30 minutes

02

Day 2: ~ 1 hour

03

Day 3: A few hours

04

Day 4: Longer indoor wear

05

Day 5: Several hoursโ€”try playing & normal daily activities

06

Day 6: Most of the day

07

Day 7: A full 24 hours in the harnessโ€”key for camping or backpacking

Positive Reinforcement is Key

As soon as you put the harness on, immediately give your cat a treat. As the days progress and they become more comfortable with it on, play with them like you normally would. You want the cat to associate the harness with positive experiences!

Important Tips

  • Do NOT rush adding the leash
  • Do NOT take them outside too soon
  • Consistency matters more than speed
  • Always reward positive behavior

If you stick with this process for a week, your cat will eventually start acting totally normal in the harnessโ€”napping, eating, just living life in it. Thatโ€™s the goal.

A note for older (or more stubborn) cats:

Some cats may take longer than 7 daysโ€”and thatโ€™s OK. Just repeat the process, slowly increasing wear time each day until it feels natural. Let them adjust at their own pace. You got this!
